A Chandler man drowned in the Salt River on Sunday, authorities said.

Joseph Gutierrez, 29, was trying to rescue his young son, who had fallen off an inflatable toy, when he went under near the Blue Point Bridge.

The 5-year-old boy was rescued by two bystanders, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Deputy Lindsey Smith said.

Sheriff's office divers recovered Gutierrez’s body shortly before 7 p.m.
