One-hundred Arizona students will compete next week to be the best geography student in the state and earn a chance to compete for the national title and $25,000 in scholarship money.

Of the 100 fourth- through eighth-graders competing in the 2007 Arizona Geographic Bee, 41 attend East Valley schools.

State coordinator Rebecca Seybert, who teaches in Tucson, said the event is important because Americans tend to be illiterate on the subject of geography.

“Just having an awareness of your surroundings, of the community and features on earth is important,” she said. “With us being strung out all over the place now, (it’s) important for our citizens to be aware of where we’re involved, and students especially.”

The bee is also a good time, she said.

“It’s a lot of fun to see

these kids demonstrate how much they know,” Seybert said. “They put adults to shame most of the time.”

Participants use materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. Students competing in the state bee have already won at the school level by completing a written qualifying test.

At the state level, students participate in an oral competition. The state winner will go on to compete at the national finals May 22 and 23 in Washington, D.C. Moderator will be “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek.

Sample question

Q: Which country has the world’s largest Muslim population — Indonesia or Mexico? A: If you have studied maps showing world religions, you will know the answer immediately. If you haven’t, you might reason that Mexico was settled by the Spanish, followers of Christianity not Islam. Either way, you correctly answer Indonesia.
