A man accused in the death of his live-in girlfriend whose beaten, stabbed and naked body was found dumped on a Tempe street pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree murder.

Douglas Ray George, 27, of Tempe originally pleaded not guilty when he was arrested in June after his girlfriend's body was identified.

His presentence hearing is scheduled for March 14.

At his brief hearing Thursday, a Maricopa County Superior Court judge told George that he could face a 16-year prison sentence.

A passer-by found the body of Annovedwin Begay-Barakzai, 23, on June 15.

An autopsy determined she died from blunt force trauma, and authorities said she had broken ribs, a lacerated liver and numerous stab wounds to her face and chest.

Begay-Barakzai wasn't identified for weeks, and police even released a sketch of the woman hoping to identify her.

A tip in the case led police to George, who was arrested earlier in June on suspicion of domestic violence assault on Begay-Barakzai, although she declined to press charges.

After interviewing George and serving a search warrant on his apartment, police investigators said they found attempts to bleach bloodstains out of carpeting, and hair and bloodstains also were discovered in the trunk of her car.
