Chandler Mayor Boyd Dunn ended his bid on Thursday to become the Maricopa County attorney. The Republican's exit will result in a primary race between interim county attorney Rick Romley and former deputy county attorney Bill Montgomery.

Romley held the post from 1989 to 1994, and was appointed to the job when Andrew Thomas resigned to run for Arizona attorney general.

"Under the previous administration, the office had lost its effectiveness as a prosecutorial agency and my primary reason for running was to fix this problem and restore the office," Dunn said Thursday in a statement. "However, the circumstances of the office have changed. After consulting with several people, I have learned that things are on an upturn; morale is improving, relationships are healing, and public trust is being restored."

Dunn is a trial attorney and has been Chandler's mayor since 2002. He was not seeking re-election.
