Chandler police arrested a 35-year-old man Sunday morning on suspicion of burglary and kidnapping after residents of a Chandler home discovered him in a 13-year-old girl's bedroom, police said.
The girl's screams awoke her mother about 3 a.m. The mother rushed into the room and saw a man later identified as Miguel Angel Vallejo straddling the girl on top of her bed, said police detective Robert Krautheim.
Vallejo tried to get out through the front door but was unsuccessful, and eventually jumped through another open bedroom window and ran from the home in the 1300 block of Estrella Drive, Krautheim said.
The girl's mother and brother gave chase, and watched him go into a nearby house. The brother recognized Vallejo as an uncle of a neighbor, Krautheim said. "The son already knew who it was," Krautheim said. "Our suspicion is he obviously knew the victim's family."
Residents at the second home apparently knew Vallejo. Officers asked to enter the home after they noticed a window pried open, and found Vallejo inside sleeping, possibly because of excessive drinking, Krautheim said. It appeared Vallejo also broke into the first home through the girl's bedroom window, Krautheim said.
Vallejo was arrested and booked into jail. Police are continuing their investigation to determine if further charges will be filed, Krautheim said.
