A Carnegie-Knight News21 reporter from Arizona State University won a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights announced last week. David Kempa’s story, “Crossing Lines,” followed Jesus Hernandez Arias into Mexico after he almost died trying to cross the border. Hernandez Arias decided no one should have to take such a chance to earn a decent living so he devoted himself to teaching Mexican farmers how to develop markets for their produce. Kempa, 26, of Pulaski, Wis., earned his master’s degree from the Walter Cronkite School for Journalism and Mass Communications in December.
