Parents of special needs kids in Ahwatukee and surrounding communities are invited to have their special athletes take part in a new PONY baseball league.
The Champions League is for individuals of all ages with special needs, said Chris Kelly, the director of the new league within the Ahwatukee Foothills PONY Baseball group. The season begins in October but the registration deadline is Sept. 15. Registration can be done online at http://www.ponybaseballaz.com/. Click on the registration tab and follow the instructions.
There is no cost to register a special needs athlete. Costs will be supported by local business and family sponsors. Team jerseys, hats and socks will be provided by the league. Players will need grey baseball pants, appropriate shoes or cleats, a glove, bat and helmet.
The Champions League was approved by the Pony League Board of Directors in 2009 and has grown quickly around the country. This will be the first season for Champions League in Ahwatukee.
Kelly said the immediate goal is to field a few teams but that one California league has a dozen teams with more than 150 special needs athletes. The inaugural season here will see six games scheduled in October and November, one game per week.
