Chandler’s historic San Marcos Golf Resort and Conference Center recently changed hands to the tune of $13.6 million and the new owners have plans to make improvements to the property.
Darlene Heavlin, vice president of sales for Heavlin Management which manages the San Marcos, said the downtown hotel was sold by Sunstone Chandler, LLC, on Nov. 18 to San Marcos Capital Partners, LP. The sale included the hotel, golf course and fixtures inside the hotel such as the furniture.
"We just thought it was a great project that had a tremendous upside with the right vision and appropriate budget to improve the hotel," said Joseph A. Witt Jr., one of four main investors in San Marcos Capital Partners.
Claudia Whitehead, downtown coordinator for Chandler, said the city is looking forward to working with the new owners.
"I know they are looking at improvements to the golf course," Whitehead said. "They’re looking at the rooms. We’re all excited about it."
Witt said the other owners plan "significant" improvements including renovations to rooms, the exterior and the landscaping. He said the details and timing are still being worked out.
"We understand and have been told by many different people involved how important the San Marcos is to the downtown," Witt said.
"We’re really excited to work with the city and others in the downtown to achieve what they envision," Witt said.
The San Marcos has 295 guest rooms, 35,000 square feet of meeting space, a restaurant, bar, two pools and Arizona’s first golf course.
