Tonto National Forest officials will conduct a volunteer flood protection event 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the Sunflower Fire closure area.

“We are seeking hundreds of volunteers to fill and place up to 25,000 sand bags in and around the forest Sunflower Administrative Site,” said district ranger Gary Hanna.

The recent Sunflower fire burned almost 20,000 acres. The Sunflower Administrative Site is a collection of historic buildings and structures that once served as a forest ranger district administrative office and work center back in the early 1900s.

Volunteers 16 and older are welcome and should wear closed-toe shoes, long pants, long-sleeved shirts, hats, sun protection, and bring gloves. Registration is online at www.voaz.org and click on calendar. Lunch will be provided.

The Sunflower area is 21 miles south of Payson and 34 miles north of the Valley.

For more information, contact the Mesa Ranger District administrative offices at (480) 610-3300.
