Police arrested a man on suspicion of murder and armed robbery after a gunbattle involving several people Tuesday night in a Phoenix apartment near Paradise Valley Mall.
Christopher Wellnitz, 23, who lived in the apartment at Summit Apartment Homes, was the only person not injured in a drug rip-off and attempted robbery that went bad, Phoenix detective Tony Morales said. Wellnitz was booked into a Valley jail early Wednesday.
Officers found one man dead and three others wounded in the apartment. The three, all in there 20s, are in critical condition, Morales said.
Police aren’t releasing the dead man’s name pending notification of family,
Morales said. The 31-year-old man is from Phoenix, he said.
Police received several calls from residents at the complex in the 4200 block of East Windrose Drive, about arguing and fighting in the apartment before the shooting began.
"Suddenly everyone produced guns and started shooting at everyone else," Morales said.
One man was found on a the west side of the complex lying on the sidewalk. A man with an arm wound was found near 42nd Avenue and Windrose and another drove himself to Paradise Valley Hospital in Phoenix before being flown to St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix. The other two were taken to John C. Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Phoenix. A largecaliber handgun, shotgun and knife were among weapons that were recovered.
