Mesa is holding a public meeting July 31 to share plans for a visitors center that will open this fall at the Mesa Grande ruins. City staff will outline plans and renderings for the project and parking at the site, which is west of the intersection of Country Club Drive and Brown Road.
The meeting is scheduled from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the West Mesa Community Development Corporation, 567 W. 10th St.
The visitors center is expected to open late this fall and will allow the public to have the first regular access to an ancient Hohokam temple mound that is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
The mound is larger than a football field and 27 feet tall, and is one of the two largest and most complex Hohokam platform mound communities to survive in the U.S. The Hohokam built and used the mound from about 1100 to 1450.
Archeologists continue to study the site, which was discovered by Western explorers in the mid-1800s. Mesa purchased the site in 1985.
