New Year's Eve, like Christmas Eve, will be a "no burn day" in Maricopa County.
The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality issued a high pollution advisory beginning midnight Friday, with the likelihood it will be expanded into Saturday.
The pollution advisory is issued when pollution may exceed federal standards. With the very cold weather and light winds, strong inversions will trap the pollution near the surface, likely leading to several exceedances of the PM2.5 (particulate matter 2.5) health standard Friday and Saturday.
When a high pollution advisory is issued by the state, Maricopa County puts "no burn day" restrictions into place. Wood burning is prohibited by residences and businesses, even those with permits.
Go to www.CleanAirMakeMore.com for information on the restrictions.
