Arizona Connections Academy, a Mesa-based virtual public school, served as a sponsor of the 11th annual KTAR Radiothon to help raise funds for Phoenix Children's Hospital, which raised more than $1 million in less than 24 hours Sept. 21-22.

Arizona Connections Academy pledged $2,500 toward the radiothon as a sponsor and then offered some matching donations during the simulcast.

"Often, we have students from across the state fighting cancer and other critical diseases that require the specialty care that PCH provides," principal Brian Rosta said in a news release. "Just last year, in fact, the hospital successfully treated a first-grade student of ours for lymphoma."

Each year, the academy participates in several community service projects, supporting the "Connections Cares" attitude that plays a big part in the school's overall philosophy, the release said.
