A student was shot with a BB gun Friday afternoon near Mesa High School, police said. The 15-year-old girl was standing with friends outside a seminary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints near the school, 1630 E. Southern Ave., when she felt a sharp pain on the left side of her abdomen, police spokeswoman Holly Hosac said.

After the girl boarded a school bus about 3:20 p.m., she felt the sting on her abdomen worsen. She saw a red abrasion with a break in the skin.

She showed the mark to her sister, who then asked the bus driver to hurry, because her sibling had been shot.

The driver stopped the bus immediately near Val Vista Drive and Hampton Avenue and radioed the information to transportation dispatchers who then called 911.

Mesa fire personnel treated the girl at the scene, and she was taken to a hospital as a precaution.

“The call was not as serious as we initially thought,” Hosac said. But she said police would interview the girl and her friends in an attempt to identify the shooter.

The shooting occurred just two days after representatives of Mesa and the Mesa Unified School District met to discuss school safety.

One topic discussed was the need for more student resource officers on junior high and high school campuses.

The off-campus shooting, however, would not have fallen into a resource officer’s jurisdiction.
