Hundreds of people and their golden retrievers attended the sixth annual Bark in the Park on Sunday in Tempe.

"It’s kind of a celebration of a new life for a dog," said Jerry Sparks, an organizer of the event at Papago Park.

Rescue A Golden of AZ, which has been placing lost and abandoned golden retrievers with families since 1998, sponsored the event to attract new members.

The organization has rescued more than 1,000 dogs, Sparks said.

There were several events throughout the day. The Bridge Ceremony was held to pay tribute to the dogs in the program that have died. The Parade of Rescues was for families who have adopted a dog in the last year. There also was an agility demonstration and games for the dogs.

Gail Chadwick of Tempe is a member. "I walk the county shelters and look for golden retrievers that need families," she said. To volunteer with the group,
