Several apartments burned Sunday night in east Mesa near University Drive and Val Vista Road.

Mesa Fire Department spokesman Dave Johnson said the fire apparently started on the first floor around 8:15 p.m. and spread to several adjacent units and several apartments on the second level.

Johnson said a 39-year-old man was rescued off a balcony, but was not injured.

It's not clear what caused the fire. Residents in six units were affected.

No other injuries were reported.
