Authorities arrested on Monday a California truck driver who is a registered sex offender on accusations that he picked up a 12-year-old girl in the East Valley and later sexually assaulted her.

Raymond Alfred Lathem IV, 41, was booked into jail on suspicion of sexual assault with a minor. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said Raymond had sex with the girl inside his vehicle Saturday.

Raymond picked up the girl, whom authorities described as a runaway, in the area of Elliot Road and the Loop 101.

Sheriff’s officials said he then drove her to the Flying J truck stop in Phoenix where he parked, watched movies with her and had sex.

The girl’s mother had reported her missing and told law enforcement officers that she could be with Lathem, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office used GPS to track down the man’s semitrailer.
