With very little discussion, the Maricopa Unified School District Governing Board approved the hiring of 23 tutors for its English-Language Learners program at all schools in the district.
“I think we’ve talked about this enough, and it’s certainly needed,” said board member Shannon Amos before the 4-0 vote.
The positions will be paid for entirely through a grant from the Arizona Department of Education.
Two tutors apiece head to Maricopa Wells Middle School and Maricopa High School, three head to Santa Rosa and Pima Butte elementary schools, five head to Santa Cruz Elementary School and eight will be staffed at Maricopa Elementary School.
The elementary English-Language Learners tutors will work Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays for two hours a day. Middle and high school tutors will work an hour-and-a-half every school day except Friday.
Maricopa Elementary houses the largest number of Ak-Chin students in the district and also houses the greatest number of students of any of the four elementary schools.
