Scottsdale’s Chaparral High School baseball coach Jerry Dawson doesn’t warm the benches when it comes to winning awards.
Dawson has been chosen as state “Coach of the Year” nine times and was picked twice as the national “Coach of the Year” by two different national organizations.
Dawson closed his glove over another award in June after he was named the National High School Athletic Coaches Association’s Coach of the Year for 2007.
The achievements of Chaparral’s baseball team — including 21 regional championships, finishing in the “final four” 16 times, four-time runner-up and seven-time state champions — can be at least partially attributed to Dawson’s 35 years of dedication and devotion.
Dawson’s love for baseball is only surpassed by his love for kids he coaches, he said.
“They are the reasons why I am still doing this,” he said.
