Over the July 4 holiday weekend, Valley residents got a peek at the monsoon, and the rain and lightning just might reappear this week.

Breaking loose late Monday, the monsoon finally appeared in scattered parts of the Valley and there's a 30 percent chance that it will return on Wednesday, according to information from the National Weather Service.

"It came in right on cue," said James Sawtelle, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service. "Although the monsoon season officially begins on June 15, it's often right around the 4th of July that it begins. Areas around north Phoenix and north of Scottsdale received a little more precipitation, causing heavy wind gusts from outflow boundaries formed around thunderstorms. Tuesday and Wednesday are the best chances for it to happen again this week."

And, it will be slightly cooler this week than it was June 22-29 when each of those days saw temperatures of 110 degrees or hotter, Sawtelle said.

Over the next four days, only one day - Thursday - is expected to reach a high of 110 before it drops back to 109 on Friday, Sawtelle said.

As the temperature remains somewhat steady with an average high of 107 forecast through the remainder of the week, the chance of rain will diminish.

There will be a 20 percent chance of rain on Thursday throughout the Valley which will last through early Friday, but temperatures in the 100s will remain, Sawtelle said.

"These temperatures are normal for this time of year," Sawtelle said.
