Hey you, person with your nose buried in a book or an e-reader: Look up for just a moment. You know how much you love to read? How your favorite Saturday afternoon is one where you're lost in the pages of a John le Carré spy novel, the latest Harry Potter adventure, a classic like "The Grapes of Wrath," or a juicy unofficial biography on some Hollywood or Washington D.C. celeb? What if you could be surrounded by books while helping someone else learn the pleasure and wonder of the written word?

Your local library is just the place for someone who loves to read and would like to help others love it too. All East Valley cities have a public library, and some have multiple branches. All rely on volunteers - adults and teens -- to help with shelving books, answering patrons' questions, and more.

To learn how you can be a volunteer, contact your local library:

• Mesa -- http://www.mesalibrary.org/about_us/volunteer.aspx or (480) 644-4638.

• Tempe -- http://www.tempe.gov/volunteer/libropp.htm or (480) 350-5190.

• Chandler -- http://chandlerlibrary.org/go2/volunteers.cfm

• Southeast Regional Library-Gilbert -- 602-652-3000

• A Helping Hand is our weekly spotlight on a volunteer opportunity in the East Valley. Find other ways to help at www.volunteermatch.org.
