A recycling drop-off location has opened in west Mesa to serve people who don’t have recycling bins where they live or work — or if they’ve generated lots of material during a clean-up.

The city opened the site at a park-and-ride lot at 1830 S. Country Club Dr. Mesa operates two other places where residents can bring recyclables, and one site is so popular that bins have to be emptied four times a week, city spokesman Mariano Reyes said.

“One of the reasons we introduced this new drop-off center is because the other two actually get visited quite often,” he said.

All three locations have containers for cardboard, bins for newspapers and blue barrels for mixed materials that include paper, cardboard, glass, metal cans, milk and juice cartons. Plastic cups and containers are accepted that bear numbers 1-7. Items should be loose, dry and relatively clean. Residents can drop off materials 24 hours a day.

The bins are meant to serve residents who want to recycle but don’t have bins at their office or multifamily community.

“Right now, a good amount of apartment complexes don’t have recycling on site,” Reyes said. “We are trying to change that.”

Mesa provides trash service to all apartments in the city and it offers recycling at no extra charge. The city will work with apartment managers to add recycling, but some complexes don’t have any extra space for the containers, Reyes said.

The city’s other recycling drop-off locations are at Dobson Ranch Park, 2363 S. Dobson Road, and at the East Mesa Service Center, 6935 E. Decatur St.

The Decatur location is especially popular, Reyes said, because it is near unincorporated areas where many non-Mesa residents have trash collection that doesn’t include a recycling component.
