East Valley residents will have a chance Saturday to visit what Banner Health officials are calling the “next generation” hospital, as they prepare to open Gilbert’s third medical facility.
Tours will be provided along with a barbecue and activities including clowns for kids at Banner Gateway Medical Center, a new 176-bed facility at Higley Road and U.S. 60.
Residents from the Gilbert, Mesa, Apache Junction, and Queen Creek areas are expected to use the new hospital, which opens Sept. 18.
“To us, ‘next generation’ means taking the hospital care to a new level, where the sole focus is on patient quality, patient outcomes, patient safety and healing,” said Becky Kuhn, CEO of Banner Gateway.
The hospital’s entire design is focused on research into creating a “healing environment.” The colors are environmental: tan, mint green and bronze. Hallways have warm photos and paintings. Windows throughout the facility draw in light and the outdoors — where there are gardens for patients and their families.
Each room has a flat-screen TV where patients can access TV, movies, games, the Internet and videos on medical care. Patients aren’t delivered food when the hospital decides, but, instead, can order room service.
Nurses aren’t stationed together in a central desk, but instead sit at desks directly outside rooms. All patient rooms are private and include a sofa bed for overnight family stays.
People can research answers to health care questions in a staffed medical library open to the public that will be in the lobby, instead of relying on the Internet, said hospital spokeswoman Susan Gordon.
A Centre for Health in 2004 report by Robert Ulrich and Craig Zimring found more than 600 studies that showed links between the a hospital’s design and improvement in patients. Windows and light as well as low noise, for example, were all found to speed healing.
“We have seen this basic design produce great patient outcomes, safety and patient satisfaction at Banner Estrella,” said Kuhn, referring to the last Banner Health hospital to open, two years ago in Phoenix. Estrella has a similar design.
This week, hospital staff used teddy bears to practice using new technology that tracks patients from electronic doctor’s charts and orders to electronic results of tests. Staff will take turns acting as patients next week, to get a feel for what patients will experience, said Jeff Brown, director of interactive services for Banner Health.
Banner Mesa Medical Center at 1010 N. Country Club Drive in central Mesa, will close Sept. 18 as its employees relocate to the new Gilbert hospital.
Former Banner Mesa patients can retrieve medical records and X-rays by calling (602) 252-1570.
