A group of seven Mesa Boy Scouts and two leaders sparked a Saturday morning rescue effort that eventually plucked 22 scouts from a campground south of Apache Lake in the Superstition Mountains, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.
Det. Aaron Douglas of the MCSO said Sunday that the area’s cold, wet weather caught three separate Scouting groups off-guard, and the Mesa group was the first to contact authorities at 7:30 a.m.
Clouds and stormy weather grounded rescue helicopters for about four hours, but Douglas said no one was seriously hurt, including one 13-year-old boy who was suffering from hypothermia.
“Everyone was fine, nobody went to the hospital,” Douglas said, and what was initially a high-priority call for the department became more routine as the circumstances became more clear.
He said the other two Boy Scout troops were from Phoenix and Prescott, and he believed the boy suffering from hypothermia was from Phoenix.
