I’d given up finding a Monte Cristo sandwich until I was at Neighbors on the northwest corner of Guadalupe and Alma School roads. They’re open for breakfast and lunch. The waitresses are helpful and friendly.
Walls are decorated with quilts and paintings. Groups of women come here to play bridge.
What’s a Monte Cristo?
The Monte Cristo, sometimes spelled Monte Christo, is like a combination of French toast and the basic ham and Swiss sandwich. The traditional sandwich is made from deli ham and Swiss cheese. The entire sandwich is then lightly dipped in egg batter and grilled. Some versions are deep fried. The Neighbors Monte Cristo uses a homemade beer batter, and is served with homemade jam.
