Mesa Mayor Scott Smith is expected to become the vice president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors this Saturday at the conference’s 80th annual meeting in Orlando, Fla.
Smith has served as second vice president and will become the conference’s president in 2013. He will be the first Arizonan to head the organization.
Smith is running unopposed for the position.
Smith’s position will elevate Arizona’s role in the discussion over national issues that include job creation, debt reduction and transportation spending.
