It was business first before the pleasure of watching top-flight pro golf in Scottsdale Thursday for former President George H.W. Bush.

After a scheduled morning speech to investment bankers from FBR Open sponsor Friedman, Billings, Ramsey Group at the nearby Fairmont Scottsdale Princess resort, the 41st president spent time in FBR’s corporate tent along the 18th green at the Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale.

Bush occasionally ventured out of the warmth and shelter of the tent to greet FBR guests watching the first round of the open from the tent’s outside viewing sections.

Just after noon, the 82-year-old former chief executive ventured down to the edge of the green to greet player Brad Faxon with a hug as he finished 1-over at 72.

When asked after his brief exchange with Bush how he knew the former president, Faxon smiled and said, “I just met him.”
