Chandler police burst onto a bloody scene Friday night when they kicked down an apartment door just after hearing a gunshot.

Inside, they found the body of a woman and a man who had just shot himself in the head.

Maximilliano Orozco, 30, was flown to Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix in critical condition after officers found him inside his apartment at 235 E. Ray Road with a faint pulse, said Chandler detective George Arias.

Police believe Orozco killed the woman, who was in her late 20s or early 30s, and then shot himself in the head.

Police did not release the woman’s name late Friday pending notification of family.

The pair have two young children together, and at least one was nearby during the shooting, but it was unclear if either was a witness.

A neighbor called 911 at 5:30 p.m. to report that a man was outside an apartment with blood on his hands and clothes.

When police arrived, neighbors said the man went back inside.

Police said five officers stacked behind one another preparing to enter the apartment.

They knocked on the door and announced that police were there.

"They heard one gunshot, and immediately kicked in the door and found the Hispanic male with a gunshot wound to the head," Arias said.

Arias said there were some similarities to the incident last week that killed Phoenix police officers Jason Wolfe and Eric White and wounded another.

"(The Chandler officers) were aware, as every police officer is, of the dangers of entering an apartment," Arias said.

"Police officers’ job is to protect life, and to do that job sometimes it means confronting danger. We are confident they did the right thing by entering the apartment.

"It was a very courageous thing they did."
