Arizona legislators may take an in-depth look at the state's tax system, with an eye toward broadening the sales tax while phasing out the individual and corporate income taxes.
A bill scheduled for preliminary consideration by the House this week would establish a committee to study those ideas and submit a report by next October.
According to the legislation, phasing out the income taxes and making more sales subject to the sales tax would be aimed at producing a neutral impact on revenue.
Other stated goals would include mitigating the fiscal impact on local governments and simplifying and broadening the tax structures.
The bill is sponsored by House Majority Leader Steve Court, R-Mesa. He sponsored unsuccessful legislation to flatten the individual income tax last year.

I am tired of being the accounting department for large corporations, such as Amazon.com! Due to their refusal to collect sales tax due to AZ, I am forced to keep mountains of paperwork to report the "user tax" (really a sales tax) to report on my personal AZ income tax form this year. Until AZ figures out a way to collect all sales tax due, I don't see how individual and corporate income tax can be phased out.

I don't mind paying my" fair share" however, I don't feel it right to tax military retirement pay. The federal government is already doing a bad number on the retirees. We don't need the state hitting us also. SS got a small increase which was the first in a long time but not enough to offset the increase of what is taken out for medicare. When on a fixed income, these dings mean a lot.(Sounds like an old song - "Little dings mean a lot!" I also don't like the property tax being used on poorly run schools. I like getting my moneys worth.[wink]
