The Higley Unified School District governing board is expected to discuss at Thursday’s school board meeting whether to search for a new superintendent or start contract negotiations with Superintendent Denise Birdwell.
Board members will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday to discuss Birdwell’s evaluation in a closed session. The board will evaluate Birdwell using a revised evaluation tool approved Nov. 20.
The regular board meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the district office, 2935 S. Recker Road, Gilbert.
The governing board decided in February to keep Birdwell in the top post through the 2009-10 school year. She was named the interim superintendent in December after the board approved giving former superintendent Joyce Lutrey a one-year early release from her contract.
Birdwell kept her interim title until her contract was up June 30.
Starting July 1, her title changed to superintendent, a change she asked for and the board approved. She said removing the interim title “brings stability” to the district through the next school year.
In February 2008, Higley created an associate superintendent position for Birdwell, combining human resources and curriculum to keep her in the district. Birdwell had been offered a superintendent job in a school district in Casper, Wyo.
