A 23-year-old Tempe man was shot and killed Sunday in what police believe was a gang-related incident.

Amadore Rodriguez was shot in the driveway of a home in the 2400 block of East Laird Street, police said. He was later pronounced dead at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn hospital.

Police said Rodriguez was with family and friends about 10 p.m. when six to eight men ages 18 to 22 walked up to the house. The group exchanged words, kicked a car and began fighting. When Rodriguez came outside and approached the fight, he was shot once.

“This investigation is being conducted by our detective bureau and our gang unit,” Tempe Sgt. Dan Masters said. “It is believed that the shooting was gang-related as the suspects were yelling gang names, and the motive behind the shooting may have been territorial in nature.”

Helped by an Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter, police officers and K-9 units searched the area, but couldn’t find the men. Police wouldn’t identify the name of the gang or the type of weapon used. The investigation is ongoing.
