As the holidays approach and military families and friends face further separation, Dave Maiden would like to cheer up soldiers serving in the Middle East and at bases around the country by sending them a gift: A greeting from their loved ones.
Maiden’s company, Video Bio, is inviting friends and family members of those serving in the military to tape messages at two Bookman’s locations later this month and next month. Loved ones have about 20 minutes to talk, dance or sing to a video camera and will later receive a free DVD to send to their soldiers.
Though Maiden has never served in the military, he said he feels empathy for the separated families.
"You hear all of the horror stories of people getting shipped over there and the tough times they have," he said. "I wanted to do something. . . . I’m sure there are some lonely folks out there that would like to see their families."
Maiden plans to spend a few thousand dollars on things such as tapes and DVDs and countless hours to produce the DVDs for friends and family members. He said they will be able to pick up the DVDs before the holidays.
Those interested should make an appointment by calling the business and then arrive at Bookman’s prepared with something they’d like to do or say, Maiden said.
"I appreciate what (the soldiers) are doing and thought I could do something for them," Maiden said.
