A Coronado High School student who participated in a hazing incident during summer band camp has been expelled.

It is the first time the Scottsdale Unified School District has expelled a student for breaking hazing rules, said spokesman Keith Sterling. The district’s governing board, which voted Tuesday to expel the student, has yet to vote on the cases of three other students who also face expulsion in the incident.

The hazing occurred during the weekend of Aug. 13-14 at a retreat in northern Arizona. In all, 10 students hazed five freshmen and sophomore band members by duct-taping their wrists and ankles and putting underwear over their heads, district records showed.

Six other students were suspended in the incident, and district officials asked Coronado band director Leslie Rich to resign despite pleas from some band parents.

The district did not release the names of any students involved in the incidents.
