Drivers will find closures and delays this weekend if they try to enter the East Valley on Interstate 10 or Loop 202.

The work that will affect traffic the most will take place on eastbound I-10 in Tempe, between U.S. 60 and Baseline Road.

Workers will close that section from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday to replace bridge deck joints. A freewayto-freeway detour will be in place, but delays are likely.

Drivers should consider other routes or expect trips to take longer, said Doug Nintzel, a spokesman for the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The detour will send drivers to eastbound U.S. 60. Drivers who planned to go farther south on I-10 can take U.S. 60 to Loop 101, then turn west on Loop 202 toward I-10.

This closure is part of the preparatory work for ADOT’s program to pave some Valley freeways with noise-reducing rubberized asphalt. Crews will probably pave part of I-10 through Tempe, Chandler and Ahwatukee Foothills in October, Nintzel said.

Also this weekend, crews will close eastbound lanes of Loop 202 from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday from 32nd to Van Buren streets in Phoenix. The closure allows workers to pave with rubberized asphalt.
