YUMA - A man in his 60s fell 15 feet into an abandoned mine shaft in southwestern Arizona and survived with only minor injuries.

Yuma County sheriff's office Capt. Eben Bratcher said Wednesday the man was looking over the edge of the mine shaft east of Yuma when the ground underneath him crumbled Tuesday.

The man fell 15 feet and landed on a small ledge of support timbers. Bratcher says if he had missed the ledge, he would have fallen about 100 feet to the bottom of the shaft.

One of four people who were at the mine with the man called 911. He was in the mine shaft for about an hour and a half before a specialized crew rescued him.

Greg Givens, an EMT with Tri-Valley Ambulance, says the man was in good spirits and was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
