Nearly 50 Scottsdale residents have pitched their names into the mix hoping to be chosen as an interim City Council member for the next four months.
Former council members, previous election losers, activists, candidates for the March 9 council election and others filed applications with the city clerk by Friday’s deadline.
The council can meet, interview and call applicants before Nov. 17, when it is scheduled to replace Cynthia Lukas, who resigned Oct. 24 in the midst of her four-year council term to run for mayor. Her replacement must be named by Nov. 24.
"It’s a lot of candidates and it’s going to take quite a bit of effort for all the council to sift through and look at applications and consider everyone, and probably make a lot of phone calls,’’ Mayor Mary Manross said.
Each council member can nominate one person. If more than one council member names the same person, that person’s chances are not increased, said City Clerk Carolyn Jagger.
A majority is needed, which means four of the six members must agree on a candidate. If there is a tie, names are pulled from a hat with the last name remaining appointed. Anyone not receiving a vote is dropped.
Among those applying for the immediate vacancy are planning commissioners James Heitel, Tony Nelssen, Jeffrey Schwartz and David Gulino; council candidates Henry Becker, Elizabeth Drake, Merlin Gindelesperger and Steve Capobres; former Councilmen Robert Pettycrew and Ross Dea, and activists Patty Badennoch, Darlene Petersen and Rita Saunders-Hawranek.
