Ironwood Cancer & Research Centers will break ground next week on a new two-story, 29,000-square-foot building in Gilbert that’s expected to open by the end of the year.
“It will be an integrative cancer center, much like our other locations,” said Ironwood practice administrator Elizabeth Mueller.
The new center, located right next to Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, isn’t far from a current location on Rome Street, Mueller said. Following the expected completion of the location in December 2013, the current Gilbert location will move to the expanded new one.
“The real goal is to provide integrative cancer care,” Mueller said. “There will cancer doctors with different disciplines that can rotate into the office.”
Outside of oncology, the center will include a number of related fields to better provide treatment to patients, such as nutritional and homeopathic services, she said.
“They will have one radiation oncologist, five medical oncologists, two urologists and others,” Mueller said. Additionally, it features a chemotherapy infusion suite, radiation oncology and diagnostic services, she said. When it opens, the center will be able to treat about 20 to 25 patients at a time, Mueller said.
Ironwood has nine locations throughout the Valley, including three in Mesa, and one in Chandler and Queen Creek. The newest location in Casa Grande opened in January.
“We’ve been partnering with Dignity Health (which owns Mercy Gilbert Medical Center),” Mueller said, explaining that it’s important to be near a hospital.
“We’ve owned the location for a while and Gilbert is a growing community.”
