PHOENIX - Gov. Janet Napolitano has signed a bill that allows Arizona public schools to permit diabetic students to give themselves insulin.
Diabetes is a disease characterized by irregular blood sugar levels.
The bill signed by Napolitano on Monday is championed by parents of children with diabetes.
It would allow school districts and charter schools to adopt policies and procedures for students to manage their diabetes on school grounds. That could include self-monitoring and self-administration of insulin.
The bill also includes legal protections for school districts and charter schools that adopt policies and procedures on diabetes.
The bill will take effect 90 days after the end of the current legislative session.
