Nicholas Groth of the Gilbert branch was chosen as the 2013 Boys & Girls Clubs of the East Valley Youth of the Year this week and will go on to compete at the state level on April 3. Nick, a senior at Gilbert High School, will receive a $20,000 scholarship from the Victoria Lund Foundation, and all other candidates will receive $2,500 from the Victoria Lund Foundation.
“I feel very fortunate to have been chosen to represent the Boys & Girls Clubs of the East Valley. They have such a great Youth of the Year program with two past national winners in Donald Smith and Mona Dixon. I look forward to this opportunity and will do my best to represent the Boys & Girls Clubs of the East Valley in a positive way,” said Nick.
Youth of the Year is an annual program where Boys & Girls Clubs of the East Valley club members of at least two years compete. Students must be sophomores, juniors or seniors and are selected based on home and family, moral character, community service, school, service to club, life goals and essays on the topic, “What the Boys & Girls Club Means to Me” and “Why Post High School Education is Important.”
