A 25-year-old woman was seriously injured after her car was struck by a Union Pacific train when she busted through the barricades at a crossing on Arizona Farms a mile east of Hunt Highway around 8:15 a.m. Wednesday.

The train, which was transporting hazardous materials including sulfuric acid, was traveling about 40 mph when it broadsided the woman's Volkswagen Jetta, according to Mark Cichocki, a spokesman for Rural Metro Fire Department. The woman was flown by helicopter to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center.

"She was very lucky," Cichocki said. "Her car impacted one of the wheels on the train instead of going underneath it."

Cichocki said he believes the woman was having trouble seeing because of the position of the sun and it doesn't appear she was impaired. The train was not damaged and Union Pacific officials are on the scene investigating the collision.
