World Trade Center beam at Gilbert memorial launches 9/11 tributes

An eight-foot structural beam from the World Trade Center was
placed in a Gilbert memorial Monday, marking the beginning of local
tributes in honor of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001
terrorist attacks.
The 1,500-pound beam, once part of the North Tower, was honored by
a color guard before it was secured by members of the community,
including Mayor John Lewis. The memorial is nearly complete and
will be unveiled in a ceremony on Sept. 11.
Prior to being placed, the beam travelled through the town so
residents could have the chance to see and touch it. The memorial
is designed so that even children will be able to reach out and
touch the piece of history.
In the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, four planes were hijacked by
terrorists. Two planes struck each tower of the World Trade Center
in New York City, soon leading to the towers’ collapse. Another hit
the side of the Pentagon and the last crashed in a Pennsylvania
field after passengers overtook the hijackers. There were nearly
3,000 deaths overall.
Gilbert is seeking videos of no more than 10 to 15 seconds of how
you or your family plans to pay tribute. The videos will be used to
create a special production to be launched on Gilbert’s Day of
Remembrance, Sept. 9, on Channel 11 in Gilbert recreation centers
and streaming at www.gilbertaz.gov online. Post your video on
YouTube and email the link to 911memorial@gilbertaz.gov. Contact
Gilbert with questions or for other ways to submit, at (480)
503-6766. The deadline to turn in videos is Sept. 5.
