United Families Arizona on Wednesday is hosting a free “Schools, Rules and Tools” seminar for parents to learn how to be active in their children’s education.

The seminar, which will take place at the state Capitol in Phoenix, will feature speeches and a mock legislative hearing.

“We want to educate parents and empower them to take control of their children’s education,” said Marilyn Crittenden, a regional director for United Families Arizona.

The seminar will begin at 10 a.m. with a speech by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne. He was chosen to speak at this event so that parents can understand the role of the school board in their children’s education, Crittenden said.

Speeches on curriculum, the role of the parent, and abstinence will follow.

Associate Superintendent of Public Instruction Cheryl Lebo, Tempe City Councilwoman Onnie Shekerjian, columnist Jane Jimenez, and United Families International president Carol Soelberg are also scheduled to speak.

In the afternoon, the seminar will continue with a mock legislative hearing. This will give parents a chance to participate with current and former state legislators to see first-hand how the legislative process works.

A short tour of the state Capitol will also be included.

Participants are asked to RSVP at mcrittenden@unitedfamilies.org.

“This is a great opportunity for parents to educate themselves on their child’s education,” Crittenden said.

United Families Arizona is state affiliate of United Families International, and is “dedicated to defending and promoting marriage and the family in Arizona,” according to the state chapter’s Web site.
