Next Lounge and Nightclub is asking the Scottsdale Planning Commission to hold off on reviewing its latest request for a bar permit.

A hearing had been scheduled for Wednesday on the downtown club, but a one-sentence letter from Next’s attorney sent Wednesday morning said: “On behalf of Next Lounge and Nightclub, we request that the matter be removed from the Planning Commission’s study session agenda.”

The item was removed, and the city also postponed the tentatively scheduled hearing on July 9 before the City Council.

In June 2006, the council failed to approve a bar use permit for Next, which at 7111 E. Fifth Ave. is surrounded by shops, galleries and other bars.

Council members expressed a desire to have bars located east of Scottsdale Road and wanted Next to have a daytime use.

Next sued the city and has continued to operate. No hearing dates have been scheduled on the lawsuit.

Next’s latest proposal included a plan to immediately start a daytime catering service, and within a year, submit plans for an interior renovation to enable food service on site.
