In a 3-1 vote, with Supervisors Andy Kunasek, Don Stapley and Fulton Brock approving and Mary Rose Wilcox voting no, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved the purchase by the county Sheriff's Office of a $456,000 bus to transport inmates.
The vote ends a two-and-half-year stalemate. The supervisors had refused to accept the bus when it was first purchased because of concerns that it was not procured properly.
"It is incumbent on us not to let it go to waste and make the best of it," Kunasek said. "This is a step in the right direction."
Kunasek, the chairman of the board, commended County Attorney Bill Montgomery for assisting in the legal research on the issue.
