The Mesa Police Department is investigating a late-night, two-vehicle accident that left one of the participants dead.

According to a press release, the incident occurred along the 2800 block of E. Southern Ave. at approximately 11 p.m. on July 4 when the driver of a vehicle going eastbound on Southern went left of center for an unknown reason and collided with a second vehicle that was traveling westbound. Mesa Police Department spokesperson Steve Berry wrote in an email the driver of the vehicle traveling eastbound, a 17-year-old male, was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver of the second vehicle was taken to Banner Gateway Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Berry said it was unknown as of July 5 if the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident.
