The public was noticeably absent at two special meetings to discuss Chandler’s annexation of 80 acres for the planned Chandler Fiesta Auto Park on the northwest corner of Gilbert Road and the Santan Freeway stretch of Loop 202.
The City Council held a special meeting Thursday afternoon to discuss annexation plans for the property, which is being developed by De Rito Partners and Kimco Development. The Chandler Airport Commission also held a special meeting Thursday night. Both meetings lasted only a few minutes with no public comment.
Mike Withey, an attorney representing the developers, was not surprised by the lack of public involvement.
"Traditionally, if you look at annexations here in the city, there’s not a lot of public testimony," he said.
City planning manager Jeff Kurtz said the tallest building at the auto park would be two stories tall and there would be signs as high as 60 feet.
Greg Chenoweth, airport manager, said the auto park is compatible with the airpark, and building heights at the auto park would not interfere with airport operations.
The airport commission unanimously agreed to forward a favorable recommendation to the Planning and Zoning Commission.
The Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. Tuesday in council chambers on the second floor of the downtown library, 22 S. Delaware St.
The final decision about the annexation and rezoning lie with the council.
Judy Skousen, assistant city attorney, said the annexation and rezoning will be referred to a public ballot if it is approved by the council.
