Construction is well under way in the Chandler Unified School District on a new elementary school to open in July.

Carlson Elementary School is more than halfway built.

The $12.4 million school, paid for with bond funds approved by voters in 2010, is the only new district campus being built in the East Valley.

Enrollment boundaries for the school, located in the Valencia community, are one-square mile bounded by Chandler Heights, Riggs, Gilbert and Lindsay roads.

About 450 to 500 students are expected to attend class at Carlson next school year, said district spokesman Terry Locke. Capacity at the campus is 950.

"We've had that property for a few years. Everyone is excited to have their own neighborhood school," Locke said.

Carlson will offer both typical and traditional classrooms for students. Parents will be able to enroll their students and request which educational format they want their students to be in. Traditional offers a highly structured, back-to-basics education and Spaulding reading program similar to Chandler Traditional Academies. Other classrooms will follow Chandler's typical curriculum.

"They're both rigorous curriculums," Locke said. "There's just a different approach for different students."

Chandler is also in the process of renovating Erie Elementary School to become Arizona College Prep-Erie Campus. The school will offer seventh- through 12th-grade education beginning in July for about 300 students. Capacity will eventually be around 600, Locke said.

Many of the future Arizona College Prep students now attend Hamilton Prep, a college preparatory program the district is housing in rented space in a church.

Construction includes a new gymnasium and adding science labs. Both projects are scheduled to be complete in time for the next school year.

Students attending Erie Elementary now have been reassigned to other elementary schools for next school year.
