When a man tried to steal a car Thursday in Scottsdale, he had no idea what he was in for.

The would-be carjacker jumped into a 46-year-old Phoenix woman’s Chevrolet Astro about 4:30 p.m., police said, after she had just removed a gas nozzle to fill up her tank at the Circle K convenience store at 8001 E. Thomas Road.

Byron Keith Atkin, 43, tried to drive away, but the woman — whose name wasn’t released Friday — didn’t want to let him go, Scottsdale police said. She reached into the van and removed the keys, said police spokesman Sgt. Mark Clark.

The struggle caused the car to run into a pillar and a pump, which began spilling gas.

Another man went to the woman’s aid. Atkin feigned as if he were pulling a gun from his waistband, and then attempted to run away, Clark said.

"The guy took off running and the witness threw him to the ground," Clark said.

The fall broke Atkin’s pelvic bone; the witness — whose name also was not released — held him down until police arrived.

Atkin was arrested on suspicion of robbery and felony criminal damages. Police turned him over to the state Department of Corrections, which will treat his fracture, Clark said.

The woman was treated and released Thursday at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn hospital.
