The Big Canyon Fire about 14 miles from Payson still burns uncontained as of Tuesday night. The Tonto National Forest announced a closure, “to ensure public and firefighter safety” during suppression activities. The lightning-cased fire began Sunday and has burned about 170 acres.

Specifics of the closure in the area can be found online at www.fs.usda.gov/tonto or by calling the Payson Ranger District at (928) 474-7900.
