East Valley libraries are encouraging patrons to read and discuss Yann Martel’s "Life of Pi," this year’s selection for the OneBookAZ program.

The program, in its third year, seeks to bring communities together through literature by encouraging residents to read the same book and participate in discussions and events centered on the book during April, Chandler reference librarian Katie Cloudman said. Libraries throughout the state are participating.

"Sometimes you read books that really stand out, and this is still my favorite book," Cloudman said. "I was reeled in by a good story and started to care about the character (a 16-year-old boy named Pi). He spends 227 days on a lifeboat with a 450-pound Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, and that really draws you in."

"After you start reading the book, you start peeling back the layers, and it’s about so many different things," she said. "Then at the end there’s a twist, which is another fun thing about the book. After I read the book, I couldn’t stop thinking about it."

For the second year, One-BookAZ has selected a children’s book so kids can also participate. This year’s book is "The Warm Place" by Nancy Farmer.

The story is about a young giraffe named Ruva who is sent to a San Francisco zoo. Ruva calls upon two rats, a street-smart chameleon, a runaway boy, and the animal world to return to "the warm place" that is home.
